HIGH-PRESSURE STEAM BOILER PLANT REPLACEMENT

Engineering design of a new boiler plant for the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System at the Montrose Campus.

Underground high-pressure steam piping connected the stand-alone central heating plant to 39 buildings totaling 750,000 GSF. The existing plant contained four (4) 725 BHP boilers from 1948, producing high pressure steam at 105 PSIG or 25,000 PPH (pounds per hour).

K&L Group provided engineering design services to replace the existing plant with three (3) new 37,500 PPH and one (1) new 7,500 PPH boilers producing 80 PSIG.

Our design services for the new plant included the following:

• A new high pressure steam boiler plant sized for the existing heating load, with low NOX burners, associated pumps, piping and other ancillary equipment necessary for a complete, operable plant
• Modifications to the existing building structure to house the new boiler plant with sufficient space to demolish and remove the original boilers and equipment, and to install the new boilers and equipment
• Installation of new piping, pipe supports and valves throughout the plant
• Installation of new economizer, condensate return & storage system, deaerator system, boiler feedwater pumps, blowdown tank, controls and compatible SCADA monitoring and reporting system, steam manifold and PRV stations
• Installation of a proper boiler plant ventilation and combustion air system
• Specify a temporary/portable rental boiler system to be installed outdoors for use while the new plant is under construction
• Connection to the hospital electric service, city water and sewers to support the boiler plant
• Connection to the existing steam piping currently fed to the many buildings on the campus
