The RWJMS and SPH Research Laboratories were linked by a central atrium and were designed to promote the cross fertilization of ideas. While each entity maintains its own identity, the design composition and linking atrium promotes the collaboration of educators and researchers.

The RWJMS occupies 90,000 sf of research space with 27 labs and included:

  • Wet labs
  • Wet lab support space and core support facilities along with office administrative
  • Open lounge / collaboration space

The SPH occupies the remaining 30,000 sf, and included:

  • Limited wet lab space
  • Classrooms
  • Conference rooms and lecture hall space
  • Student lounge space
  • Office and administrative space

The facility also housed a 20,000 sf transgenic mice vivarium, a core imaging suite, housing interdepartmental instruments and a state-of-the-art Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility with an 800 MHZ unit. The research labs utilized a system of modular casework and customizable equipment alcoves to maximize flexibility and facilitate assignability.
