SAINT NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH

130 LIBERTY STREET

NEW YORK, NY

Size: 10,000 SF

DETAILS:

MGE provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and fire alarm engineering services, including all conduit, power and raceway requirements for the audio/visual, security and telecommunications systems shown on the MEP drawings for the construction of the new Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church located within the Ground Zero restoration site on the grounds of 1 World Trade Center bounded by Greenwich, Cedar and Liberty Streets. The structure consists of a 3-story tall building approximately 10,000 square feet of total area located on top of a structural mat provided by the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey (PANY/NJ).  The team worked closely with the in-house engineers of the PANY/NJ and the Greek Orthodox Church Diocese of NY.

Due to the small footprint of the building, multiple MEP shafts were strategically located throughout the church to route all ductwork, piping, and electrical conduits to the floors. Each shaft was fed from a common 30” deep interstitial crawl space fed from the penthouse level mechanical equipment room.  Strict coordination between all trades was required to maintain both the aesthetic and religious integrity of the building as well as the surrounding iconic World Trade Center site. MGE worked closely with Koutsomitis Architects and world renown architectural firm, Santiago Calatrava Architects.
