REPLACEMENT OF CHILLERS & COOLING TOWERS

K&L Group provided engineering design services for the replacement of the existing rooftop 8-cell cooling tower at the 1.4 million SF James J. Peters VAMC with eight (8) new individual cooling towers. When 1 of the 8 cells stopped working, the entire system had to be shut down. The solution was to install eight (8) individual cooling towers, producing 5,000-tons of refrigeration. In the event that 1 of the cooling towers failed, the remaining 7 would support the required load.

Replacement included all exterior piping, VFD’s, condenser water pumps, motors, electrical valves and controls incorporated into the existing Building Management System (BMS).

The design included new basin distribution array and valving for serviceability and two (2) sewer “deduct” water meters on the makeup supply line for each cooling tower. A new side stream filter system was also incorporated into the design. The cooling towers received new lighting on the top of the towers and in the immediate surrounding areas to allow for night-time maintenance.

Also, part of this project was the replacement of existing chillers with one (1) new 800-ton chiller and one (1) new 1,000-ton chiller. The scope of work required us to survey the entire area of design and identify all missing fireproofing on the structural steel members and to include the design and specifications for remedial work which may be required.
